Food Label Claims: Documents to Request Before Buying
Share
Ask for evidence tied to the exact label and intended use whenever a supplier makes a technical or regulatory claim. A broad phrase such as FDA-approved is not enough to decide where or how to use a label.
Tie the claim to a component and intended use
Request a product data sheet and the basis, scope and limitations of the claim. For wash-away or residue claims, ask about the container surface, storage duration, water conditions and removal method used. Keep supplier answers alongside the approved SKU rather than in an unsearchable email chain.
Evidence to request from the supplier
- Ask for a product data sheet and intended use.
- Request test conditions for adhesion and removal claims.
- Check regulatory statements for scope and accuracy.
- Retain supplier correspondence with the approved SKU.
Separate a tub exterior from direct food contact
If a statement concerns food-contact use, ask which component and contact conditions it covers and have the appropriate reviewer assess the documentation. An exterior storage-tub application and direct contact with food are different use cases. A kitchen sample trial can screen usability; it cannot create missing regulatory evidence.
