Unreadable Restaurant Prep Labels: Check Ink and Layout

If prep labels become unreadable during service, test the writing tool as well as the label. Smudging can come from an unsuitable pen-and-surface combination, damp handling or cramped entries rather than adhesive failure.

Separate writing failures from label failures

Record whether the label stays attached but the ink smears, the label face breaks down or the whole label comes off. Photograph an example at application and at the end of service. Keep the pen model with the record.

Run a simple combination test

  1. Ask the supplier which writing tools suit the exact label face.
  2. Write the same item and date on each candidate using the same handwriting size.
  3. Allow any drying time specified for the writing tool, then test ordinary dry and damp glove handling.
  4. Inspect after refrigerated holding and the busiest relevant service period.

Make room for the information

Try the longest common food name and the complete date format. If entries overlap or staff shorten them inconsistently, choose more writing space or a clearer layout. A darker pen cannot fix a field that is too small.

Standardize the successful combination

Keep the approved pen at the dispenser and replace worn pens promptly. Do not reconstruct an unreadable food date from memory; resolve the container under the kitchen’s approved procedure. A label intended to dissolve during washing should not be assumed moisture-proof during service.
