FIFO Food Rotation at Home: A Practical Fridge Routine
Share
FIFO means first in, first out: use eligible older food before newer replacements. At home, it works best as a quick check before shopping and a consistent way to put groceries away.
Make a use-first area
Choose a visible fridge shelf or bin for foods that need attention soon. Keep items in their appropriate storage conditions and separate raw foods as needed; a use-first area should not override safe storage. Label home-prepared food with its identity and preparation date.
Rotate groceries as you unpack
- Check the older package before adding the new one. Compare opening dates, storage history and product instructions.
- Place suitable older stock in front and newer replacements behind it.
- Plan a specific meal or snack for the food in the use-first area.
- Remove items that should be discarded instead of repeatedly moving them forward.
Use dates to prioritize, not to excuse problems
An item bought first is not always the next item to use. Opening, preparation and handling can change the decision. Consult FoodSafety.gov’s food-specific storage chart rather than treating every food as if it has the same refrigerator life.
Learn from what gets wasted
Keep a short note of discarded foods and the reason: bought too much, hidden behind other items or no meal planned. If cut produce is repeatedly left over, buy a smaller amount or plan its second use when you unpack it.
