Assisted Living Refrigerators: Rotation and Daily Checks
Share
Manage assisted living refrigerators by checking whether food is eligible for use before deciding which container to use first. Keep food names, required dates and storage locations readable to every shift.
Assign clear storage zones
Map ingredients, prepared foods and specialized meal components according to the facility's separation procedures. Mark exception stock so staff cannot mistake it for available food. Keep equipment airflow and access requirements in mind when placing containers.
Use a consistent daily review
- Complete required cold-holding checks.
- Read the identity and applicable dates on prepared or opened food.
- Remove or escalate items under the approved exception procedure.
- Position remaining eligible stock in the required rotation order.
- Record disposal and any unresolved concerns.
Example: two matching containers
Two containers may hold the same dish but have different preparation histories. Check their labels and records rather than choosing the one nearest the door. Moving a container to another shelf must not change its discard information.
Use disposal causes to improve the process
Separate unknown-date losses from overproduction and equipment-related disposal. The causes call for different fixes. Include unresolved stock questions in the next handover, with an owner and documented disposition, instead of leaving the next shift to repeat the same investigation.
Safety and regulatory considerations
Facilities serving highly susceptible people must apply the relevant heightened food-safety protections and follow institution-approved procedures. Dietary or allergy restrictions require verification against current authorized orders and kitchen controls. The FDA Food Code is model guidance; applicable laws and institutional policies may differ.
