Food Labels Tear When Removed? What to Test Next
Share
When food labels tear during removal, test the face material and adhesive together on the problem container. A label described as removable can still fragment on a rough surface or under a removal method it was not designed for.
Record how the label breaks
Note whether a corner cannot be lifted, the face splits into layers or paper remains over adhesive. Record container material, scratches, temperature and how long the label has been attached. These details help a supplier suggest a relevant sample.
Compare alternatives fairly
- Apply current and candidate labels to matching clean containers.
- Hold them for the normal period, then remove according to each product’s instructions.
- Repeat at the actual removal temperature rather than only on a warm countertop.
- Count fragments and time spent clearing them, including any second cleanup.
Consider the washing route
If staff repeatedly pick tiny pieces from a large bin, test a stronger peel-removable face stock or a dissolvable candidate compatible with the approved wash routine. Wash-away stock must also remain readable through storage and service.
Make the decision on completed cycles
Compare correctly labeled and cleaned containers, not successful peels alone. Request product-specific removal directions, check plastic and metal separately, and keep a record of any container that still requires another format before placing a bulk order.
